Damen Verolme Rotterdam to welcome back the Stena Don Drilling Platform

With a long history of handling repairs and refits for the largest and most complex offshore structures, Damen Verolme Rotterdam (DVR) is a natural candidate for any major installation project on board a large offshore drilling rig ahead of its redeployment on a new contract.
The yard’s experience, facilities and keen pricing all contributed to it recently winning the tender for works to the Stena Don, a harsh environment, dynamically-positioned, Class 3 semi-submersible drilling rig operated by Stena Drilling. It can drill in waters up to 500 metres deep and has accommodation for 120 personnel. 95.5 metres in length and with a beam of 67 metres, it was built by the Kvaerner Warnow Werft Shipyard in Germany in 2001. This will be the drilling rig’s fourth visit to the DVR site. Its most recent stopover was in July 2015 when it came in for a special periodical survey and a mid-life upgrade including a range of maintenance works.

The project won by DVR is the installation of an eight-point mooring system. This will enable the rig to operate over a wider range of water depths, to remain longer on station than before, particularly in adverse weather conditions, and will also make it more fuel efficient compared to relying solely on the DPS.
Eight-point mooring system
Before the Stena Don arrives at DVR the various components of the system will need to be manufactured. These include the anchor chain blisters and sponsons which, weighing 1,200 tonnes in all, are currently being fabricated at the latest addition to the Damen family, Damen Shipyards Mangalia (Romania), before being transferred to Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Other elements of the system that are currently being manufactured include eight anchor winches and the fairleads, plus the winch control cabins which will be supplied by Rolls Royce. Modified VFD switchboards and brake resistor units are being delivered by Siemens. The eight ultra-high-holding power anchors will be supplied by Damen Anchor & Chain Factory.
Besides the mooring system, the yard will also install strengthening to the hull to comply with the new regulations regarding the mitigation of wave impact forces.
Arriving in October 2018
The Stena Don is scheduled to arrive at Rotterdam in mid-October, when the first order of business will be the removal of the six DPS thrusters. This will take place in the Maasvlakte 2 deepwater location, an area of greater depth outside the yard. After that it will be towed into DVR where it will be positioned in the largest drydock in the Damen group, and one of the largest in Europe. DVR’s drydock no. 7 is 405 metres long and 90 metres across, and can take vessels and structures with a draught of up to 12 metres.

Not only is it a fantastic project to have at our yard, but it also indicates that the oil & gas market is reviving. The North Sea seems to be one of the first areas that is showing light at the end of the tunnel.”
The works are expected to take around three months to complete. At the end of January 2019, the rig will be towed back out to the Maasvlakte 2 deepwater location for the reinstallation of the thrusters before moving out into open water for sea trials. Once those are completed and certified she will head north for the open Atlantic west of the Shetland Islands to start a drilling campaign in March.
